Goat Hill Weekly: Week 2

Work Week: 2 Days

What to watch out for:

1. Speaker Hubbard and President Pro Tem Marsh said jobs would be tops on the agenda and they’re sticking to their word.

These jobs bills passed the House last week and will be taken up by the Senate this week:

HB 154 Sponsored by Rep. Dan Williams: Tax incentives for Data Processing Centers to help recruit more Data Centers to Alabama

HB 39 Sponsored by Rep. Paul Lee: Tax incentives and economic enhancements for aviation centers allowing the state to better recruit aircraft manufacturers and related industry.

HB 144 Sponsored by Rep. Bill Roberts: This legislation will expand tax incentives for the Alabama Coal Mining Industry.

This week the House will consider bills that were reported out of Committee last week including economic development bills aimed at boosting the auto industry and suppliers and the “Heroes for Hire” bill that gives businesses incentives to hire Veterans returning home and looking for work.

Tuesday the House and Senate will convene at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.

2. HB 88 by Rep. Mike Millican

The House Health Committee last week passed a prescription requirement for common cold meds with only one dissenting vote. Apparently the bill closely resembles a Mississippi statute to stop Meth manufacturers from gaining access to these drugs which contain substances used in the manufacturing process.

This caught my attention today though because, as I was driving home, I heard a commercial encouraging folks to call their legislator to oppose this bill.

The BCA is also against the bill saying, “While we recognize the need to eliminate meth labs in Alabama, requiring employees to take time off work to visit their physician to obtain a prescription for common cold and allergy medications would increase health care costs and reduce worker productivity.”
