From courthouse squares to front porches, Governor Kay Ivey is encouraging Alabamians to create a light-filled, patriotic display across the state by illuminating homes, businesses and government buildings in red, white and blue as the nation marks its 250th anniversary.
Ivey is asking residents to participate in “Light to Unite” Week, July 1-8, a nationwide campaign honoring the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence’s adoption. Alabamians are encouraged to display the American flag as part of the celebration.
“This July 4 marks a very special and historic anniversary for our Republic and the cause of liberty,” said Governor Ivey. “We celebrate 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of our great country. All Alabamians are encouraged to unite in celebration of America by lighting up their homes and communities to reflect the grand colors of our flag: red, white and blue and by displaying the Stars and Stripes.”
The “Light to Unite” campaign was launched by the National Flag Foundation to unite Americans in celebration of the country’s shared heritage. Ivey signed a proclamation designating Light to Unite Week in Alabama, joined by Sen. Arthur Orr, chairman of the Alabama Semiquincentennial Commission.
“As we prepare to commemorate 250 years of American independence, this initiative offers a fitting tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who built and defended our nation,” said Orr (R-Decatur). “By lighting our homes and communities in red, white and blue, Alabamians can come together in a visible show of unity in celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary.”
The July 1-8 observance coincides with the historic week when the Continental Congress debated and voted for independence, formally adopted the Declaration of Independence and publicly read the document to the American people.
Earlier this year, Alabama launched its America 250 commemoration with a May 21 celebration at the State Capitol, where Ivey unveiled a special 250th anniversary U.S. flag that will hang between the Capitol’s columns this summer. The celebration also featured a performance by Randy Owen of Alabama and a flyover by four F-35 fighter jets over the Capitol.
America will celebrate many more Independence Days, but only one 250th anniversary. By lighting homes, businesses and government buildings in red, white and blue, Alabamians have an opportunity to become part of that once-in-a-lifetime celebration and join communities across the nation in honoring America’s history.
