DeBoer indicates major role change could be coming for Ryan Williams

The Alabama Crimson Tide have begun spring practice and while a ton of the attention is on the quarterback battle, someone outside the position is unsurprisingly getting a significant amount of buzz.

After bursting onto the scene as a 17-year-old freshman, star wide receiver Ryan Williams is already becoming one of the best in the entire country. The hype surrounding Williams headed into year two is substantial with Tide fans already excited to see his continued development.

While addressing the media after practice this week, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer – whose offensive system was critical in getting Williams to commit following the retirement of Nick Saban – talked about what kind of role fans could expect to see Williams in this season.

The dynamic speedster had to play a ton of reps on the outside last season, but we may see more inside slot action for Williams this year.

“Bringing in [Miami transfer] Isaiah Horton, and having more length on the outside now with Jalen Hale (injured in 2024) too, has allowed Ryan to move around to different spots,” DeBoer explained when asked how Williams’ route tree could develop. “Between he and [returning wide receiver Germie Bernard], and I think Isaiah could play [in the slot as well], maybe not in the slot all the time, but these guys are versatile.”

With Williams having the versatility to play multiple different positions, he could add a new level to Alabama’s offense this coming year as they try to improve from last season’s difficulties.
