The incident occurred just before 7 a.m. at the intersection of Grants Mill Road and Overton Road. Meadows was putting out traffic cones when a Chevrolet Colorado driven by a 32-year-old Leeds man hit him. Meadows was transported to Grandview Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:39 a.m.
The report stated the driver was following another vehicle westbound on Grants Mill Road. When the roadway transitioned into a four-lane section, allowing for passing, the driver attempted to pass the vehicle ahead. It was during this maneuver that the collision occurred.
According to the Alabama State Troopers, there were “no warning signs or other measures in place to alert drivers of potential hazards or ongoing work in the roadway ahead.” Additionally, Meadows’ police vehicle, parked on the left shoulder, did not have its blue lights activated.
The driver, who stopped at the scene, told investigators, “My feet were hot, and I looked down for a second to adjust the heat. I saw cones at the last minute, and the next thing I know, I hit something.”
The vehicle was reported to be traveling 47 mph in a 40 mph zone. A witness said the truck had been closely following their vehicle.
“The truck then drove around me and struck the officer while he was putting cones out,” the witness stated.
No charges or citations have been issued.
Lt. Meadows was a U.S. Army veteran, a law enforcement officer since 1992, and a longtime member of the Church of the Highlands. He is remembered as a dedicated public servant and family man who impacted many lives during his career.
