Chris Low warns of further CFP expansion: ‘If we get to 24, it ain’t gonna stop there’

Throughout this offseason the most headline-dominating topic has been the upcoming potential expansion of the College Football Playoff despite it being just two years since the start of the 12-team format.

Unfortunately for fans and fortunately for television executives, the hottest discussion has been surrounding 24 teams in what would be a seismic jump that has the potential to devastate the impact of the regular season. Everyone has their opinion on the subject, and while fans are pretty much overwhelmingly against it, that has never mattered to the decision makers in this sport.

One of college football’s most legendary writers in Chris Low of On3 jumped on with “The Next Round” and warned that if decision makers are in fact successful in getting it to 24, it won’t stop there.

“I don’t think the average fan wants to see 24 teams in the playoff,” Low said. “I don’t ever want to see a big upset or an epic win that in the grand scheme of things doesn’t matter….It just feels like to me it becomes more of an invitational than it is a playoff. And rest assured, if we get to 24 — it ain’t gonna stop there. It will not stop at 24, we’ll go bigger. It always does.”

If 24 teams does indeed happen — which is starting to seem inevitable — Low is likely correct that it will not be the final expansion of the field.

Every day, this sport looks further and further removed from what it once was, and while change can be exciting, many fans are understandably not happy about that.
