The City of Atmore announced Tuesday that U.S. Sen. Katie Britt has secured $1.25 million in federal funding for stormwater infrastructure improvements to address recurring flooding in the Escambia County community.

According to the city, the funding was awarded through Congressionally Directed Spending and will support upgrades to Atmore’s stormwater drainage system. City officials said the improvements are designed to reduce flooding risks that affect residents, businesses and public infrastructure.

“Senator Katie Britt has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the people of Atmore and to the future of our community. We cannot thank the Senator enough for her tireless help and support in securing this transformative investment,” said Mayor Shawn Lassiter. “Her leadership has made it possible for our city to take a bold step forward in protecting our residents, our businesses, and our infrastructure from the growing risks posed by natural hazards.”

Atmore, like many communities near Alabama’s Gulf Coast, has experienced flooding and storm-related damage during hurricanes and other severe weather events. City officials said the project is intended to provide long-term resilience during major storms and help address ongoing stresses on the community’s drainage system.

Britt, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the funding will help address longstanding drainage concerns while improving public safety.

“I’m proud to deliver $1.25 million in funding for the City of Atmore to upgrade its stormwater infrastructure,” said Britt. “As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I’m committed to returning taxpayer dollars right back to our communities. This critical funding will address longstanding drainage issues, reduce flooding risks, and better protect homes, businesses, and public safety. I’m eager to see the lasting impact this project will have in strengthening Atmore’s resilience for years to come.”

According to the city, the improvements are expected to provide measurable flood-risk reduction in some of Atmore’s most vulnerable areas while helping protect residents, businesses and public infrastructure during future storm events.

The City of Atmore is the largest municipality in Escambia County and has identified infrastructure improvements as a priority as community leaders continue efforts to strengthen the city’s long-term resilience.
