U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) has introduced a bipartisan bill with U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to help eliminate digital gambling advertisements targeted toward minors.

The Gaming Advertisement to Minors Enforcement Act would put a stop to sports betting ads streamed to social media platforms — like TikTok and Instagram — where there are a high amount of minors.

“Congress has been completely feckless when it comes to protecting our children online,” Britt said via aldotcom. “We talk about this crisis nonstop, but have not done nearly enough to address it…We know targeted advertising from gambling and prediction market websites can serve as the gateway to dangerous habits that too often become crippling addictions. Our legislation takes a critical step toward addressing this problem before it worsens.”

While some states do have similar bans, making it nationwide would prevent the sports books from getting around those laws through other media avenues.

The Federal Trade Commission would be responsible for the law actually being enforced and that fines of $100,000 could be imposed for each advertisement for sports gambling that ends up being viewed by a minor.

Clearly, this is a growing problem that Britt and others in the Senate are taking steps to try to address.
