Pizza may have originated in Italy, but it’s a staple of American diets today. If you’re hosting a party, or just hanging out with friends, pizza is usually a safe bet. Time.com reports that on any given day, 13% of Americans will enjoy a slice of pizza.

Since pizza is such an important part of our culture, thrillest.com, a website “obsessed with everything that’s worth caring about in food, drink, and travel,” set out to name the best pizza joint in ever state. “We like to think that somewhere, in each state, there’s a truly sublime pie,” writes Adam Lapetina for Thrillest.

The website selected Post Office Pies, based in Birmingham, as the best pizza place in Alabama.

Located in the Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham, Post Office Pies resides in the old Avondale post office and opened in March of this year. According to the restaurant’s website, the pizza joint is a collaboration between the owners of of Saw’s Soul Kitchen and chef John Hall. Hall grew up in Avondale before moving to New York City to hone his skills as a chef. But now he’s back home and making a name for himself in the culinary scene.

“When John Hall moved back to his hometown of Birmingham, he brought with him experience on the line at Manhattan’s Gramercy Tavern, Per Se, and Momofuku, and, most importantly, the cred of operating an illegal pizza pop-up out of his NYC apartment,” writes Lapetina. “With two handmade brick ovens, crusts that took six months to perfect, and a bevy of house-made toppings, like sausage — plus a brewery next door supplying the booze, Hall’s spot is revolutionizing pizza in Bama’s largest city.”
