Auburn secures national championship in golf with victory over Florida State

The Auburn Tigers are national champions following a 3-2 victory over the Florida State Seminoles in the championship match at at Omni La Costa North Course in Carlsbad, California.

This came after a thrilling Tuesday in which the Tigers defeated Virginia and Ohio State en route to qualification for its first-ever title match in program history.

The match was clinched by a par putt on the 17th hole by senior J.M. Butler, while freshman sensation Jackson Koivun chipped in to win his match on the 14th hole.

Koivun said he was just happy to be a part of a title after his ridiculous freshman campaign that saw him land accolade after accolade.

“I was just happy to be part of it,” said Koivun. “I was just trying to make up and down and was lucky enough to hit the flag and go in. It’s been a whirlwind of emotions. There’s a lot of awards I’ve collected but this one right here is definitely the biggest one.”

Auburn’s head coach Nick Clinard expressed pride in his team as well.

“I’ve got a great group of young men. We’ve got six of the best players in the country,” Clinard said. “We’ve got great leadership…They went out there today and got the job done.”
