Alabama is extremely banged up heading into Knoxville for tough Tennessee matchup

The Alabama Crimson Tide heads to Knoxville this weekend for the Third Saturday in October and will try to avoid their third straight defeat in Neyland Stadium.

While this Tide team may be more equipped to avoid an upset than Kalen DeBoer’s first in 2024, this Tennessee team presents some serious challenges, especially on defense. As it turns out, the injury report makes things a whole lot more difficult for Alabama and they may be down several of their most important players.

Ryan Coleman-Williams was already announced as likely out by Kalen DeBoer earlier in the week, leaving the Tide without their most important weapon on offense. The real name to watch though is starting center Racin Delgatty, who is listed as questionable after a fourth-quarter injury against Georgia but seems more likely than not to wind up sitting as well.

Delgatty being out only makes things harder on Keelon Russell, with Mal Waldrep Jr. likely to step in at center and force Russell to take snaps from a player who does not have any experience there. Not to mention, the Vols have one of the best interior defensive linemen in the nation in Xavier Gilliam.

Gilliam has been taking games over by absolutely wrecking opposing centers, so on top of getting the snap cadence and chemistry with Russell down in a very loud hostile enviornment, Waldrep is going to have his hands full with an absolute monster right in front of him.

On the defensive side of the ball, Alabama is going to be without their top run stopper in defensive lineman Terrance Green, who was out during the second half against Georgia with a lower-body injury that ultimately helped the Dawgs find success on the ground. With a Tennessee team that wants to run the football, losing Green is a tough blow.

While Justin Hill’s probable return at edge rusher is significant, this is certainly a serious challenge for an Alabama team that hopes to avoid its second straight loss, something DeBoer has not suffered in three years in Tuscaloosa.

It’s not usually easy in this game, and the injury report is making it a whole lot harder.
