AEA Calling on Teachers to Stop Much Needed Education Reform

The AEA and their creepy email header image are back and they have the “Education Options Act” squarely in their sights.

In this week’s “Goat Hill Weekly,” we published the facts about the Education Options Act. The AEA, however, is fighting this bill tooth and nail. Here are a few of things to consider:

1. The Education Options Act does not require the creation of even one charter school. The legislation merely provides the framework for an innovative school board to change the status quo.

2. This bill provides a pathway for school systems to obtain flexibility from state statutes or state board regulations in order to make improvements in their system. That doesn’t have anything to do with charters.

3. To convert to a charter school, a proposal would be submitted by the local school superintendent and approved by the school board, but could ONLY move forward if a majority of parents of the existing school’s enrollees approved. Aren’t those the people who should be making decisions about what’s best for their children?

Call the Statehouse – 334-242-7600 – and leave a message for your Representative to VOTE NO on House Bill 541.
House Bill 541, the so-called Education Options Act of 2012, is really a charter school bill. With the passage of this bill, charter schools will be unlimited for the future and can escape education laws created over decades, such as the Foundation Law.
