Yaffee: Now President Trump can nominate Steve Marshall to be the next U.S. Attorney General

While Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall might be disappointed this week after losing the Republican primary election to be the state’s next U.S. Senator, I actually think he might be more qualified for another important job: U.S. Attorney General.

There’s an opening, Marshall is now available, why wait? Trump should waste no time and nominate him now.

There is still an opportunity for someone to be chosen by Trump to lead the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) after Pam Bondi resigned from the position. I can’t think of a better fit for the job than the man who has fought against the left in the courts on almost every major issue in the last decade.

Here are just some examples on how Marshall led the way in fighting for the Trump administration, fighting for conservative values, and fighting for states’ rights.

  • In February 2024, Marshall filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday in support of Tennessee and Kentucky laws that will protect children from experimental gender transitional treatments.
  • Also in February 2024, Marshall enlisted support from state attorneys general across 22 states in filing a brief in the U.S. Supreme Court that supported former President Donald Trump’s request to place a stay on his trial proceedings until the court can first rule on his claim of presidential immunity.
  • Last year Marshall filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Biden administration proposed change the meaning of “sex” to “gender identity” in Title IX.
  • Marshall was also ahead of the curve on the issue of racial gerrymandering, arguing against it in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in 2023.
  • On the issue of abortion, Marshall has been fighting for life most of his career. In 2021, he joined 19 other states in supporting South Carolina’s Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act. And after Roe V. Wade was eventually overturned, Marshall fought to make sure the state could enforce it’s abortion ban.

I could go on and on and on about the success Alabama’s Attorney General has seen in front of judges. I believe he would see that same success in Washington D.C.

Beyond fighting it out in the courts, it’s also the job of the Attorney General to fight against crime. Once again, Marshall is the man to get the job done.

Before there was a crime task force in Washington D.C. or Memphis, Marshall helped set one up in Montgomery Alabama, and it showed real results.

Marshall was instrumental in the creation of the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit. The group operated with the support of the U.S. Department of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. The task force’s primary job was responding to emergency calls within Montgomery.

During its first two weeks, the task force reported conducting 413 traffic stops, making 49 arrests for various charges, executing 195 arrest warrants, recovering five stolen vehicles, and seizing 33 firearms.

Over and over against Alabama’s Attorney General has proven he can successfully fight for the people, fight for the states, fight against crime, and fight against corruption, all while promoting strong Christian conservative values.

Marshall put Alabama first for years, it’s now time for Trump to enlist him in the fight to put America first as the next U.S. Attorney General.
