One of Alabama’s most well-known outdoor enthusiasts passed away early Monday morning after a battle with cancer.
James “Big Daddy” Lawler of Wilcox County was well known for his Gettin’ Outdoors with BDL podcast and radio show as well as his lifelong efforts to promote the Alabama Black Belt Region’s outdoor recreational opportunities.
The Wilcox County Chamber of Commerce posted about Lawler’s passing on social media.
“Wilcox County has lost one of its best! James Lawler loved and promoted Wilcox County and the region like no other. He lived and breathed the outdoors, he had a vision and a dream for what we could be, and he shared it with everyone he could – through his podcast and radio program, through tournaments, through his stories, through hard work and advocacy, through his friendships, and his fighting spirit.”
“We love you Big Daddy, and we are sure gonna miss you!!!”
Lawler’s obituary highlighted the success of his ‘Gettin’ Outdoors brand and also his “infectious enthusiasm.”
“Under Lawler’s leadership, Gettin’ Outdoors evolved into more than just a brand – it became a cultural phenomenon. Through his radio show, YouTube channel, and social media presence, Lawler shared his expertise, stories, and adventures with millions of people worldwide.”
The Alabama Bass Trail Tournament Series praised Lawler in a post calling him a “true treasure and champion” for all outdoor enthusiasts.
