WATCH: DeBoer surprises Keelon Russell with national player of the year award news

The Alabama Crimson Tide has a very special freshman quarterback coming to campus this spring in top prospect Keelon Russell of Duncanville, Texas.

Earlier this month, Russell was named as the Gatorade Player of the Year in Texas, an honor that he shares with a number of players who went onto elite careers both at the college and the pro level. But on Friday, Russell received an even bigger honor when he was named the Maxwell National High School Player of the Year over every other high school football player in the nation coming off an absolutely absurd season with the Duncanville Panthers.

In his senior season this year, Russell threw for 4,177 yards and 55 touchdowns with just five interceptions, numbers that would be incredible at the NFL level let alone just high school. Russell received a FaceTime call from his future head coach Kalen DeBoer along with offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan to tell him the news:

Fellow Alabama legends to win the award include Bryce Young and Derrick Henry, both of whom would go on to win a Heisman trophy.

Russell is enrolling early at Alabama and should begin joining team activities in January. When he takes over remains a question, but Alabama has their quarterback of the future.
