The University of South Alabama (USA) is reporting its largest freshman class in school history this fall, marking the third consecutive year of overall enrollment growth, according to data released by the university.
Total enrollment climbed to 14,285 students, an increase from 14,003 last year. The surge was driven largely by undergraduate growth, including 2,137 first-year students. University officials also highlighted record retention numbers, with more students than ever returning for their third and fourth years.
University President Jo Bonner credited faculty and staff for the continued momentum. “A third consecutive year of enrollment growth is a testament to our dedicated faculty and staff who have worked so hard to make the University of South Alabama a top choice for students,” Bonner said. “When we travel throughout the state and along the Gulf Coast, the reception from high school students is truly humbling. They see the unique opportunities and vibrant community we offer, and they’re excited to join a university that’s experiencing such incredible momentum.”
Freshman enrollment has risen more than 30 percent over the past three years. The university attributed part of the increase to robust recruitment, including 750 high school and community visits last year and 51 Jag Days, which brought students to campus aboard Jaguar Athletics buses.
In addition to the size of the incoming class, the university noted academic strength, reporting a record-tying average GPA of 3.75 for first-year students.
Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Andi Kent said the growth reflects both numbers and quality. “I am thrilled with not only our increase in enrollment, but also the academic accomplishments of our incoming students,” Kent said. “There is truly something special happening here at South, and we’re proud to see more and more students choosing to be a part of it.”
University officials emphasized that the record freshman class and three-year streak of growth are positioning South Alabama as one of the state’s fastest-rising institutions. USA highlighted that new recruitment strategies and expanding academic opportunities are fueling the momentum, with more students choosing to live on campus than ever before.
