The University of Alabama is among 26 colleges and universities nationwide selected for First Lady Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future initiative, which provides scholarship opportunities for individuals from the foster care community.
Trump recently highlighted the scholarship program and its growing network of participating universities in a Facebook post.
“Since launching the Fostering the Future initiative in 2021, I have been proud to partner with 26 esteemed universities, each playing a crucial role in cultivating the leaders of tomorrow,” Trump wrote.
The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa is the only Alabama institution on the current list of schools offering Fostering the Future scholarships.
UA’s involvement goes beyond appearing on the list. In April remarks before the House Ways and Means Committee, Trump said the University of Alabama was among universities across the country educating Fostering the Future students.
“In fact, academic institutions such as Vanderbilt University, the University of Miami, Louisiana State University (LSU), University of Virginia (UVA), the University of Texas, the Ohio State University, and the University of Alabama all educate Fostering the Future students,” Trump said.
Fostering the Future, part of Trump’s BE BEST initiative, was established in 2021. The program secures scholarship opportunities at colleges and universities across the country for individuals from the foster care community.
Trump described the goal of the initiative during her April remarks as helping participants gain access to a university education, find employment and become financially independent.
The program also points to the challenges foster youth can face in pursuing higher education. Fostering the Future cites statistics from the National Foster Youth Institute showing that 3% of former foster children obtain a college degree.
“America’s foster youth are not defined by their circumstances — they are defined by their potential,” Trump says on the Fostering the Future website.
The scholarship network expanded in August with the addition of Indiana University and Purdue University. A $2 million donation from IndyCar and Fox Corporation will fund scholarships at the two schools, bringing the Fostering the Future network to 26 academic institutions nationwide.
The expansion was announced Aug. 20 during a White House Rose Garden event, where Trump described education as a path toward greater opportunities for young people from the foster care community.
“Our mission is simple yet transformational: provide every young person from the foster care community the chance to earn a college education, launch a meaningful career, and achieve lasting financial independence,” Trump said.
