TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The end of Governor Robert and Dianne Bentley’s 50 year marriage became official Tuesday when it was signed off on by a Tuscaloosa judge, a mere month after Dianne Bentley filed, citing “a conflict of personalities which destroys the legitimate aims of matrimony.”
In the initial filing, Dianne Bentley requested the governor pay off all debts incurred by the couple, as well as all homes and furniture, but the final settlement, unsealed Tuesday, splits assets between the Bentleys.
Gov. Bentley will retain ownership of the couple’s home in Tuscaloosa, though Dianne Bentley is allowed to stay there through December 2017, as well as land in while the former Mrs. Bentley will own two beach homes in Gulf Shores.
All furnishings, minus a select few, will remain with Dianne Bentley.
Gov. Bentley will keep his lawnmower and 2015 GMC Sierra, while Dianne will keep a 2011 Ford Explorer and sole title on a joint checking account to be used for upkeep of the Tuscaloosa home during her residence.
Each must pay for credit card purchases they made while married.
Governor Bentley must pay Dianne Bentley $750 a month in alimony, which may be reduced depending on Social Security benefits.
The records of the settlement were requested to be unsealed by the governor, who released a statement Tuesday after the divorce was finalized.
“The last four weeks have been a very difficult time for my family and for our state,” Governor Bentley wrote. “The people of Alabama have prayed for us and have encouraged us. For that, I am extremely grateful.
“Dianne and I have reached a mutual agreement in our proceedings. I have asked Judge Philip Lisenby to unseal settlement documents so the public and the media will have full access to it.
“Thank you for your continued prayers and support. I am truly blessed and deeply honored to serve as your Governor.”
