The U.S. Department of Education is considering a modification to Title IX that would require public schools to allow biological males to compete in female sports.
The Biden administration first announced the controversial proposal in December 2021, which drew fierce criticism from cultural conservatives and women’s rights proponents alike.
One of those critics of the Title IX proposal is U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), who on Tuesday penned a letter to U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona in which he slammed the administration’s move that he warned would “tear down” women’s athletic achievements “in an effort to further its own progressive agenda.”
“It is my understanding that the Department of Education is currently considering a proposed regulation that would modify Title IX implementation to adhere to the progressive priorities of the Biden administration,” wrote the former Auburn University head football coach.
Tuberville noted in the letter that next month would mark the 50th year that Title IX has been established as law in the United States.
“Any such weakening of current Title IX protections would amount to a reversal of 50 years of progress for women and girls in sports and an offense to every woman who has ever benefited from the enactment of the law,” he added. “Title IX has fostered generations of female athletes who would otherwise never have been afforded the same opportunities as their male counterparts.”
Alabama’s junior senator announced his intentions to be at the forefront of the effort to derail the administration’s attempts to implement its liberal policies as it related to transgender athletic competition in female sports.
“So far, thirteen states have enacted bills that prohibit transgender athletes from competing in female athletics to guarantee a level playing field,” continued Tuberville. “I plan to lead efforts against this misguided policy to ensure no federal action will negatively impact female athletics and erode these long-standing protections for women and girls.”
According to Tuberville, the Biden administration had sacrificed athletic opportunities for “generations” of females in favor of “liberal extremism.”
“The entire country is watching while this Administration destroys opportunities for generations of women and girls at the behest of liberal extremism. This proposed policy reversal will affect how women and girls approach athletics from this point forward,” concluded the senator.
