Throwback: Wild Alabama-Texas A&M ending in 2022 between Saban, Jimbo

The Alabama Crimson Tide is hosting the Texas A&M Aggies this week at Bryant-Denny Stadium for the first time in almost half a decade.

With the SEC West now defunct, the Tide and Aggies don’t get the chance to face off every year, and it will actually be the first time Kalen DeBoer has taken on Texas A&M at all.

In Nick Saban’s final season, Alabama went to College Station and earned a close victory through a tremendous defensive effort and possibly the best game of Jalen Milroe’s career, but it was the matchup the year prior that was billed as so huge.

The offseason leading into 2022, Jimbo Fisher took exception to Saban comments that the Aggies had  “bought” their entire roster. It led to Fisher absolutely eviscerating Saban in a press conference and alluding to the fact that he believed his former boss at LSU had bent rules in the past.

As a result, the matchup was billed up to be a revenge game for Saban, even though Alabama was a huge favorite at home. Fisher’s team came in and played an inspired game in Bryant-Denny and it went right down to the wire.

A controversial pass interference penalty on the final drive put the Aggies on the two-yard line and the brink of pulling off the massive upset, but the Tide made a stand and was able to keep Texas A&M out of the end zone and preserve the win in one of the loudest moments of the last several decades in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

While the teams and coaching staffs are obviously very different, it’s always fun to reflect on the last time Alabama hosted the Aggies and the stakes it had, because coming off two-straight losses, this is as must-win as it gets for the Tide.
