Alabama voters in Districts 1, 2, 6, and 7 went to the polls Tuesday for a special primary that was called by Governor Kay Ivey after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared Alabama to use the congressional map drawn by state lawmakers in 2023. This replaced the court-drawn lines imposed by a federal court in the 2024 elections.
Former U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) won the Republican nomination for U.S. House District 1 contest with 74.7% of the vote. Carl represented Alabama’s 1st Congressional District from 2021 through 2025, and served on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Appropriations Committee. He left Congress after court-ordered redistricting placed him in the same district as U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), who defeated Carl in the 2024 Republican primary.
Carl will be running against Democratic nominee Clyde Jones in the general election.
In U.S. House District 2, State Rep. Rhett Marques (R-Enterprise) secured the Republican nomination with 50% of the vote against five other candidates. Marques, who represents Alabama House District 91 and spent more than two decades running a tire and automotive business in the Wiregrass, was endorsed by U.S. Sen. Katie Britt early in the campaign.
Marques will now be going against incumbent U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) in November.
Incumbent U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) will again be the Republican nominee for U.S. House District 6. The congressman defeated Case Dixon in the special primary with 87% of the vote. Palmer is seeking a seventh term in Congress.
Maurice Mercer was able to secure the Democratic nomination with 64% of the vote.
Educator and Congressional candidate Ammie Akin won the GOP nomination for U.S. House District 7 with 73.3% against David Perry. Akin has 25 years of leadership across every level of Alabama’s education system, as a classroom teacher, a school administrator, and a college professor training the next generation of principals and superintendents.
She will now face incumbent U.S. Rep Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) in November.
