The Auburn Corner: What do we make of Alex Golesh’s wild up and down first season?

(Auburn Athletics)

The Auburn Tigers dropped another one in a largely non-competitive fashion this past weekend, being destroyed on the road by the Ole Miss Rebels right after a drubbing at the hands of the LSU Tigers last week at home.

For a significant chunk of the season, Auburn has looked completely overwhelmed against SEC competition and not been able to even compete, something frustrating for fans and troubling for the future of Alex Golesh.

At the same time, the Tigers defeated Georgia for the first time in close to a decade just weeks ago, and did it in Athens for the first time since 2005.

It was such a monumental victory that Golesh almost has a clean slate for the rest of the season no matter what happens.

Almost.

Auburn, who kept defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin and much of last year’s elite defense, is getting shredded by productive offenses. On the other side of the ball, Byrum Brown — Golesh’s hand-picked quarterback — has been a complete disaster and seems to be getting worse as the season goes on.

It’s not to say Golesh’s job is in jeopardy. Undeniably, steps have been taken in the first year of this new era. Barring an absolute meltdown, Auburn is going to be bowl eligible for the first time since the 2023 season, and beating Georgia was the kind of win that makes a season.

Still, fans want to see this team compete, and toppling the Bulldogs only to be obliterated by LSU and Ole Miss has left fans scratching their hands.

Golesh still has plenty of time left to pick up a couple of wins and make this first year a resounding success rather than just a marginal one, but this team is going to have to play a whole lot better than they have been as of late.
