In one of the biggest upsets of the night, Robertsdale farmer and Army veteran Terry Waters defeated three-term incumbent State Sen. Greg Albritton (R-Range) in the Republican primary for Alabama Senate District 22.

Waters took 9,084 votes (52.1%) to Albritton’s 8,349 (47.9%), a margin of roughly 735 votes across a district covering parts of Baldwin, Mobile, Washington, and Escambia counties.

Albritton, the powerful chairman of the Senate General Fund budget committee, was first elected to the Senate in 2014 after previously serving four years in the Alabama House.

He has been the Senate’s lead author on comprehensive gambling legislation each year.

Despite being outspent dramatically, Albritton entered the cycle with more than $463,000 on hand compared to Waters’s $16,500,  Waters built a winning coalition with strong support from the Alabama Farmers Federation’s Baldwin, Mobile, Washington, and Escambia county chapters.
