Southern Union State Community College (SUSCC) Veterans Specialist Rosario Thomas has been named Military Friendly’s Alabama Veteran of the Year and is now in the running for the national title.
The announcement was made on June 13, following the close of primary voting on Memorial Day, which determined state-level winners.
According to the Military Friendly® website, the Veteran of the Year program honors individuals of strong character who have made a positive impact either during or after military service. In-uniform accomplishments may include exemplary combat or non-combat military service, while post-service recognition is based on community involvement, professional success, overcoming challenges, or other contributions to society.

“I think all veterans are Veterans of the Year for the State of Alabama,” Thomas said.
A former SUSCC student himself, Thomas once relied on the college’s Student Veterans Resource Center (SVRC). Featured in a 2019 video by the Alabama Community College System, he now serves as a vital support figure for the more than 350 veterans and military dependents enrolled at SUSCC. In his role, he assists students in navigating their education benefits and learning how to apply them effectively.
“For most veterans, all we need is somebody who listens to us,” said Thomas. “I give them an ear. I give them give little guidance to help them be more successful.”
Thomas will now represent Alabama in the national round of voting for the 2025 National Veteran of the Year award.
Voting is open through July 4, and national winners will be announced on September 11.
