Successful Mobile area high school football coach placed on administrative leave

An Alabama high school football head coach has been placed on administrative leave coming off what has been a very successful run for his program in the Mobile area.

Mary G. Montgomery High School head coach Zach Golson has revitalized the Vikings program to be one of the most successful in the state during his run there, but his fate could be in jeopardy — a signing ceremony that allegedly involved eighth-graders signing letters of intent to play football at MGM.

It is being called into question whether all of the middle schoolers were zoned for the Semmes area high school.

In a story from Ben Thomas of AL.com, Mobile County Public Schools director of communications Rena Philips confirmed the news but could not comment further, and Golson was also unable to comment at this time.

During Golson’s four seasons leading the Vikings, the program has a record of 37-10 and has made the playoffs each year in Class 7A, even making a run to the state semifinals back in 2023 before losing to Central-Phenix City.

In both 2022 and 2023, Golson was named by the Alabama Sports Writers Association as the Class 7A after taking Mary G. Montgomery to the playoffs coming off an 0-10 season in 2021.
