Slide the City: 1,000-foot slip-n-slide coming to two Alabama cities this summer

(Video above: Highlights from Slide the City)

Residents of Vestavia Hills and Huntsville better get out their inner tubes and water wings this summer because they’re going to have the chance to take slip-n-slides to a whole new level.

Slide the City, a three-lane, 1,000-foot water slide will be coming to Vestavia Hills and Huntsville this summer. The slide will spend a day in Vestavia on June 25th then visit Huntsville on July 9th. And this isn’t your average water slide. Slide the City includes an all-day block party, from 9:00 am to mid-evening, complete with music, food trucks, vendors, and a slip-n-slide that’s longer than three football fields.

And don’t worry – unlike your run-of-the-mill slip-n-slides where sliding over the tiniest rock can feel like a collision with a boulder, this slip-n-slide is padded. According to Slide the City’s website, “this slide’s got more cushion than your grandpa’s orthopedic sneakers.”

Slide the City is only visiting 100 cities across the United States and Canada during its 2016 tour, and Alabama is lucky enough to have two locations. The slide will be set up on Lime Rock Road when it comes to Vestavia. Residents not participating in the block party will be able to use alternate routes to get around the blocked-off area. Parking for the event will be at Vestavia Hills High School.

Huntsville was lucky enough to experience Slide the City last year, so many of their residents already know about the amazing experience. There are currently no details about Slide the City’s Huntsville stop this year, but when the slide came to town last year it rolled out down Church Street in downtown.

Only 5,000 tickets will be sold for each location. Sliders must be at least 5 years old and taller than 46 inches. Those taking the plunge must use an inflatable tube, which they can either bring or purchase at the event. A ticket for one slide is $10, but you can buy a 3-slide ticket for $20 or an all-day pass for $40. When purchasing your ticket, participants must select a two-hour window in which they wish to slide. Tickets also come with an entry wristband, drawstring bag, and a mouth guard – safety first!

Fun and entertainment isn’t the only focus of Slide the City. As an organization that depends on water, conservation is a high priority. The slide is designed to re-circulate water throughout the day to minimize water use, and the organization also partners with Generosity.org to raise awareness of the global water crisis.

Tickets for the Vestavia Hills event and updates for Huntsville can be found on Slide The City’s website.
