Sessions releases ad highlighting opposition to amnesty, trade deals and defunding police

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions released a new ad on Wednesday that highlights his conservative record and attacks his opponent former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville for his time living in Florida and for not participating in a debate during the runoff.

The ad specifically mentions how Sessions fought against amnesty for illegal immigrants and touts how he “refuses to go along with the mob defunding the police or erasing American history.”

The Sessions campaign says the piece, officially named “Washington’s Choice,” will begin airing statewide on Wednesday.

The 30-second spot begins with a narrator saying “here we go again, Washington’s trying to choose Alabama’s senator, spending millions on Tommy Tuberville.”

The language appears to reference outside spending such as the efforts undertaken by the conservative group Club for Growth and others which have spent significant money supporting Tuberville.

The advertisement also uses what has become a hallmark of Sessions’ campaign: attacks on Tommy Tuberville for living in Florida and declining to debate during the runoff.

“Alabama won’t send a coward to the Senate,” states the narrator in the ad, referencing Tuberville’s debate decision.

Tuberville’s camp has argued in the past that they are not debating as a matter of campaign strategy, and pointed out that Sessions declined some debate-like joint appearances before the initial March 3 primary.

Recent polls have shown Sessions trailing Tuberville, especially after the former coach received President Donald Trump’s endorsement, but they also show Sessions improving from where he was in the spring.

The primary runoff election will be held on July 14.
