1 DAY REMAINING IN THE 2024 ALABAMA LEGISLATIVE SESSION

Rep. Moore: ‘No Speaker, no recess’

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore believes his Republican colleagues in the House should remain in Washington until a new Speaker is elected.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) won the Republican conference nomination today, but it’s not certain if he can win enough votes in a House floor vote.

Moore (R-Enterprise) joined his fellow members in the House Freedom Caucus in calling on the GOP in Congress to remain in Washington until a new leader is chosen.

“No Speaker, no recess,” Moore posted on X Monday. “The American people are depending on us.”

The House Freedom Caucus released a statement urging the current leadership to do what it can to speed up the process of electing a new Speaker.

“The House Republican Conference must remain in Washington, D.C. until a new Speaker of the House is elected,” said the release. “Republican leadership should have kept Republicans in Washington over the weekend. Our work is not done. In fact, we are starting at ground zero after Jim Jordan, arguably one of the most popular Republicans in the country, was rejected by House Republicans.”

The caucus said that the current situation only helps serve the “swamp.”

“We must proceed with all possible speed and determination,” the release said. “Intentional and unnecessary delays must end. It serves only the lobbyists of the swamp and defenders of the status quo to continue to drag out this process.”

U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer also wanted to speed up the process, which is why he withdrew his name from consideration for the job.

“Congress and the American people needed a Republican Speaker three weeks ago. If withdrawing my name can help expedite that process even a little, then I will gladly step aside,” Palmer (R-Hoover) said. “The candidate forum and individual conversations have given me great hope for the future of the 118th Congress. All the candidates are committed to ideas similar to the principles I laid out last night.”
