State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) thinks that maybe Alabama should follow President Donald Trump’s lead and rename one of the main waterways that travels through the Yellowhammer State.

Thursday, Trump announced that he is ordering the Interior Department to officially rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” The move comes after trade talks with Canada broke down earlier this week.

Friday on WVNN’s “The Dale Jackson Show,” Orr was asked if maybe there’s another body of water that deserves some kind of name change.

“Let me tell you something that’s always kind of I don’t know I don’t want to say irritated, but I’ve kind of wished we could go back in time,” Orr said. “The Tennessee River, you know, here it comes through Alabama in a big way, and so why do we have to name the Tennessee River? Why does why does Tennessee get the naming right?”

The Tennessee River goes through Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Kentucky. According to some historians, by the late 18th century, it had come to be called “Tennessee,” a name derived from the Cherokee village named Tanasi.

While some might suggest renaming it to the Alabama River, Orr had another idea.

“So, I would argue that we need to get with Tennessee and come up with a neutral, a state neutral name for the Tennessee River and change it, ” he continued, “Cumberland River, DeSoto River, you know, whatever.”

The senator admitted though that there are bigger issues than changing the name of a well-known river.

“So you know, my wife was born in Tennessee, my mother was born in Tennessee, but I wish we could rename the river, if I were king for a day,” he said. “But there are bigger problems to face.”
