Rep. Carl: Death threats over Speaker vote ‘disgraceful’

U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl expressed frustration over some of the pressure campaigns on social media and other places over electing the next Speaker of the House.

According to reports, several Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives and their families have received death threats in an attempt to pressure them to support a certain candidate for Speaker.

Carl (R-Mobile), who voted for U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) to be Speaker last week, said he believes the threats are just adding to the problems in trying to select the new leader.

“It was disgraceful that several of my colleagues, their spouses, and even their children received death threats because of pressure on social media,” Carl said on X. “I believe these threats and this drama contributed to Jim not securing the Speakership.

“That’s not the way Americans should operate, and threats of violence are totally unacceptable. As we move forward in this process, I ask that you stay engaged with me and share your thoughts”

While the congressman didn’t say who he might vote for next, he emphasized that his vote will be what’s best for the country.

“We’ve got some really solid individuals who’ve stepped up to run, and I look forward to asking them tough questions about making Congress work again,” he said. “I will make my decision based on who is best for #AL01 and our nation as a whole.”

House Republicans voted to remove Jordan as Speaker nominee Friday. The Republican Conference is slated to meet tonight to select a nominee.
