President Donald Trump on Monday night announced the nomination of Alabama Supreme Court Justice Gregory “Greg” Cook to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, praising Cook’s record and calling him a strong addition to the federal bench. “The people of the Great State of Alabama are in good hands with Greg on the Federal Bench,” the president wrote.
Cook was elected to the Alabama Supreme Court in November 2022, winning the general election with 67.4% of the vote, and took office in January 2023. If confirmed, he would leave the state’s high court after a single term to take a lifetime federal appointment.
The nomination fills the seat opened when Chief Judge R. David Proctor, a George W. Bush appointee who led the court from 2024 to 2026, took senior status on January 1.
The Northern District is the state’s largest federal court, operating out of courthouses in Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Decatur, Florence, and Gadsden.
Cook’s nomination heads to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery), who sits on that committee, helped steer all three of Trump’s earlier Alabama district-court nominees. That included Eddie LaCour and Hal Mooty to the Northern District and Justice Bill Lewis to the Middle District to confirmation last year, with U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) backing each.
Britt also drove the confirmations of U.S. Attorneys Phil Williams and Thomas Govan for the Northern and Middle Districts, rounding out a slate that has reshaped Alabama’s federal bench and top prosecutorial offices.
Senator Britt issued her congratulations on Monday night as well. “[President Trump] selected a highly-qualified, well-respected Alabamian who brings years of experience to the federal bench,” she wrote.
