U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville’s (R-Auburn) campaign for governor discarded opponent Doug Jones’ latest call for a gubernatorial debate between the two candidates, telling Yellowhammer News that Alabamians are owed something better than Jones promising “it will be different this time.”

Jones made the challenge this weekend at a Marshall County town hall after a participant asked whether he had formally challenged Tuberville to a debate.

He floated a five-stop series on the “back of a flatbed truck” with no moderator.

Jordan Doufexis, Tuberville for Governor campaign chairman, told YHN that Jones and Tuberville are two candidates “with very clear philosophies and voting records.”

“Coach spent his time in the Senate voting for the people of Alabama,” Doufexis said. “DC Doug spent his time in the Senate voting for Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi.

There’s nothing new to learn in a debate other than Doug telling the voters ‘it’ll be different this time.’”

Jones served in the U.S. Senate from 2018 to 2021.

Heritage Action gave him a 9% score, among the most liberal, for the 116th Congress. He voted against confirming Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018 and voted to convict President Donald Trump on both articles of impeachment in February 2020, nine months before Trump carried Alabama by 25 points.

“For over a year, we’ve built a campaign that can talk directly to the people of Alabama every single day. We’ve raised the money, we’ve put in the work, and we’re taking our message to voters,” Doufexis added.

“Doug hasn’t and that’s his problem, not mine.”

Campaign finance reports filed with the Alabama Secretary of State’s office show Tuberville’s campaign with $9.53 million on hand at the end of July to Jones’ $1.7 million. Tuberville has raised $13.7 million since launching his bid in May 2025.

Jones pressed Tuberville for debates in 2020 as well. But at that time, the fundraising factor was flipped, with a 4-1 advantage for Jones.

During the 2020 cycle, Jones raised $26.4 million to Tuberville’s $7.4 million, according to FEC data — yet, Tuberville won 60.1% to 39.7%.

President Trump, who has endorsed Tuberville for governor, called Jones a “Super Liberal puppet for Schumer & Pelosi” during that race.

“Come November, the voters will decide and I am confident they will have enough information to make the right decision,” Doufexis said.
