Well, that was interesting. Loads of top teams lost, meaning the power rankings look a bit different than they did last week. Of course, this isn’t the Final Four and there’s still plenty of football left to be played, but maybe this year will be filled with chaos instead of nice uniformity.
My first idea for this week was to write a large preamble and simply put this GIF in the place of my usual top 10. This is my response to such drastic upheaval.
But that would be a ridiculous thing to do, so here are the new-look rankings, complete with all those giant-beaters.
With its dominating win over LSU, Auburn is in the power ranking driver’s seat. But a game against Miss. State this weekend will show if the Tigers can maintain this spot.
If you’ve made it this far in the article, you’ll know that the Bulldogs play Auburn this Saturday in a massive midseason showdown. College Gameday didn’t leave the state of Mississippi and will be in Starkville Saturday morning. Maybe it can bring another Magnolia state team a win over the defending SEC champions.
Coming off its biggest win ever against Alabama – the biggest day of football in the state of Mississippi – the Rebels have to make the quick turnaround and play Texas A&M.
While the Seminoles’ wins haven’t been overly impressive, they have still been wins. Florida State has been a constant while the college football world temporarily crumbled around it. It isn’t their fault Wake Forest is a terrible conference opponent.
The Bears beat Texas this weekend and have themselves a date with the Horned Frogs this weekend. Next week’s power rankings could get weird.
It’s a loss, but the season isn’t over for Alabama. The game this weekend at Arkansas is a great opportunity for the Crimson Tide to redeem itself and show people that all is well.
Notre Dame’s results so far mimic its 2012 national championship appearance run. The Irish are surviving, which in this season may be the only thing that matters.
The Horned Frogs beat Oklahoma and kept the crazy weekend going. Baylor is next on their schedule, but the Bears are the last ranked team remaining for TCU this season.
The Wildcats removed Oregon from the conversation for a second straight season. For some reason, the Ducks, on a Thursday night, can’t hang with Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez and his squad.
Like Alabama, the one loss to Miss. State isn’t necessarily a death knell, but with the still-partying Ole Miss coming into College Station, this week could be a huge week for redemption.
