As America continues to celebrate its 250th anniversary, one of Alabama’s most important gateways to global trade is receiving national recognition for helping build the nation.
The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) has recognized the Port of Mobile as one of its “250 transportation projects that helped build America,” a nationwide initiative honoring transportation projects that have strengthened the country’s economy and connected communities throughout American history, according to the Alabama Port Authority.
The Port of Mobile is one of five Alabama transportation landmarks included on the list. Other Alabama honorees are the Bankhead Tunnel, Mobile River/Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge, Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, and Jubilee Parkway & George Wallace Tunnel. ARTBA’s list also includes iconic transportation achievements such as the Interstate Highway System, the Transcontinental Railroad, and the Golden Gate Bridge.
“For nearly a century, the Port of Mobile has connected Alabama businesses to markets around the world while also supporting jobs and economic growth across our state,” Alabama Port Authority Director and CEO Doug Otto said. “We’re proud of that legacy, and we’re honored that ARTBA has recognized the Port as one of the transportation projects that helped build America. We remain committed to investing in the infrastructure and capacity needed to serve Alabama and its people for generations to come.”
Established in 1928, the Port of Mobile has grown into one of the nation’s fastest-growing seaports and serves as Alabama’s gateway to global trade. According to the Port Authority, it supports one in seven Alabama jobs and has generated more than $415 billion in statewide economic impact since 2019.
The Port Authority says more than $2 billion has been invested over the past decade to expand the Port and strengthen the infrastructure needed to support Alabama businesses and future economic growth.
As the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, the recognition places the Port of Mobile alongside some of America’s most significant transportation achievements and solidifies its role in driving Alabama’s connection to global markets for nearly a century.
