Nick Saban finishes third in Alabama SGA presidential election

YH Nick Saban
In a historic election, the University of Alabama voted Elliot Spillers as its new SGA President on Tuesday, by a large margin.

Of the 14,931 votes counted — the highest turnout in years — Spillers received 8,602 votes, defeating his opponent Stephen Keller who received 6,263. Over 41 percent of the Alabama student body took part in Tuesday’s election, and about three dozen of those students used their votes to write-in other candidates.

Coming in third, with a massive result of six votes was Alabama head football coach Nick Saban. The coach garnered the most write-in votes of any candidate, capturing .04 percent of the vote.

Saban also received 12 votes in the race for Vice President for Academic Affairs, 11 for Vice President for Financial Affairs, 11 for Executive Vice President, 11 for Vice President for External Affairs, 10 for Executive Secretary, and four for Vice President for Student Affairs. Coach Saban’s schedule would have been even more outrageous had he won all those elections.

Other than random students who presumably voted for themselves and friends, other Alabama players, fictitious characters and inanimate objects each received one write-in vote for SGA President. Alabama running back Kenyan Drake, quarterback Blake Sims, punter JK Scott, running back Derrick Henry and mascot Big Al all received one vote each for SGA President. While Barack Obama, “Fire Anthony Grant,” Jack Daniels, Napoleon Dynamite and Tom Brady were able to nab one vote as well.

Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin also received four votes for the office of Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Luckily, none of these write-in candidates came close to impacting the actual election, but there’s nothing quite like politics in action.

Here is every result from every Alabama Executive SGA election.
