BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Jefferson County commissioners announced Tuesday grocery chain Publix is planning to build a distribution center in the McCalla area. The distribution center will provide approximately 200 jobs to Jefferson County.
According to commissioner David Carrington, Jefferson County was in competition with several other areas to receive the placement of the distribution center, making it a huge success that Jefferson County was chosen for the Publix distribution center.
The distribution center will be built in the Jefferson Metropolitan Park in McCalla, and will provide supplies for Publix stores in Alabama as well as other states in the region.
The addition of the distribution center will be a $34 million investment for Publix. However, Publix will also be reaping some rewards for the placement of their distribution center in McCalla. Carrington also said that Jefferson County is offering an economic development package that would give Publix a $40,000 tax abatement for 10 years.
The Jefferson County commissioners will vote on the economic development package for Publix on Sept. 10.
