Nearly 300,000 Alabamians filed new unemployment claims from March 15 — April 11

MONTGOMERY — The Alabama Department of Labor on Thursday released the State’s official count for initial unemployment claims filed last week, April 5–11.

This latest period saw 77,515 Alabamians file their initial claim. The week prior, that number was 106,739; from March 22–28, 80,984 people in the Yellowhammer State filed their initial claim.

In all, 277,607 have now officially filed an initial unemployment claim in the four weeks since March 15.

This total does not factor in claims filed this week, April 12–18. This week’s numbers will be released next week.

Of the 77,515 initial claims filed last week, 71,374 were reported as coronavirus (COVID-19) related.

Jefferson County had the largest number of initial claims last week with 10,709.

The week of March 8–14, there were only 1,824 initial unemployment claims filed, according to the Department of Labor.
