A Mobile County judge has sentenced Darius Lucky to two life-without-parole sentences following his conviction in the 2023 killing of 9-year-old Cailee Knight.
According to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office, Lucky was convicted of capital murder – shooting into an occupied dwelling and capital murder – victim less than 14 years of age in connection with Cailee’s death on Dec. 5, 2023.
Prosecutors said evidence presented during trial showed Lucky and his co-defendants fired multiple rounds into a residence while Cailee was asleep on a couch inside the home. Cailee was killed during the shooting.
A Mobile County jury found Lucky guilty on both capital murder charges.
Judge Brooks sentenced Lucky to life without the possibility of parole on both counts, which prosecutors said is the only sentence permitted under Alabama law for the convictions.
District Attorney Keith Blackwood said the sentence cannot undo the loss suffered by Cailee’s family.
“Cailee Knight should still be here today. She should have had the chance to grow up, chase her dreams, and live the life that was stolen from her by Darius Lucky’s senseless act of violence,” Blackwood said. “Our office remains committed to pursuing justice for Cailee and holding every individual involved in this tragedy fully accountable.”
The State of Alabama was represented by Blackwood, Assistant District Attorney Madison Davis, Trial Coordinator Amanda Sumrall, and Victim Service Officer Leigha Arthur, according to the district attorney’s office.
