Hoover Mayor Nick Derzis has endorsed State Sen. Jabo Waggoner (R-Vestavia Hills) for another term in the Alabama Senate, pointing to the longtime lawmaker’s record of leadership and regional impact.

In a statement announcing the endorsement, Derzis praised Waggoner’s effectiveness in the Legislature and his role in shaping growth across the Birmingham metro area.

“Throughout his years of service, Jabo Waggoner has proven himself to be one of the most effective and respected leaders in the Alabama Legislature—consistently delivering meaningful results that have strengthened Jefferson and Shelby counties. His leadership has helped shape our region—From championing the expansion of the University of Alabama at Birmingham into a world-class institution and medical hub, to driving economic development and securing critical investments in roads and infrastructure. Simply put, much of the progress we have experienced across metro Birmingham and Hoover today is a direct result of his work. We are fortunate to have one of the most effective legislators in Alabama history representing us—someone who understands how to get things done and deliver results in Montgomery for our communities. I am proud to stand with leaders across our region in endorsing Jabo Waggoner for another term in the State Senate. He is both a proven leader and a trusted friend, and I encourage everyone who cares about the future of Jefferson and Shelby counties to join me in supporting him on May 19.”

Derzis, who was elected mayor of Hoover in 2025, previously served in the city’s police department beginning in 1979 and later as police chief for more than two decades.

As mayor, his priorities include public safety, infrastructure improvements, commercial revitalization, and community partnerships.
