A former Alabama Crimson Tide football player is facing charges of wire fraud and identity theft after allegedly using wigs and fake identification to secure nearly $20 million in loans.

Luther Davis, who played in all 14 games to help Alabama win a national title in 2009 and was a part of Nick Saban’s first recruiting class, is accused of pretending to be three different NFL players.

The players allegedly impersonated are Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr., former Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku and Green Bay Packers safety (and Alabama alumnus) Xavier McKinney.

According to court documents and a story from ESPN, none of the players had authorized the loans and that fake email accounts were created without their knowledge.

Davis and alleged scheme partner CJ Evins are accused of “fabricated personal financial statements, Secretary of State documents, and bank statements for companies purportedly operated by the players,” according to court documents.

Furthermore, Davis would allegedly show up “dressed in disguise and impersonated the players” at the loan closings, federal prosecutors stated, even wearing makeup and a wig to impersonate Njoku during a video conference to close on a loan for a $4 million promissory note back in early 2024.

There are 13 similar situations totaling just under $20 million.
