Lane Kiffin implies SEC is working against LSU with daytime kickoff for Alabama game

LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin is the greatest headline creator in the sport, and that has been the case once again this week during the SEC teleconference.

Kiffin was asked about his reaction to the news that LSU and Alabama would kick off during the day at Tiger Stadium instead of at night. Not only did he express surprise, he also took it a step further, suggesting slyly that the SEC is working against LSU after the controversy headed into the season.

“I was shocked,” Kiffin said of his initial reaction to the news. “I never even thought or considered that it wouldn’t be at night….I just assumed, especially since the last 16 years, this game has been at night here all the time. I guess that’s probably naive of me.”

“I was joking to [LSU SID Michael Bonnette] earlier, saying obviously the SEC wanted to change it from how it’s been to give LSU less of an advantage because of how well LSU plays at night and how intimidating it is to play here. I was like, ‘If someone thinks the SEC wants us to win this year after what’s been going on, they must’ve just been on Mars the last four months.’ So I guess when I look at it that way, I’m not surprised.”

Considering there was an active lawsuit between the school and the conference, and even talks of LSU being removed as an SEC member institution before the season due to their push to add NFL players to the roster, perhaps Kiffin’s theory is not the craziest thing in the world.

When looking at the actual schedule and realizing both Georgia vs. Ole Miss as well as Notre Dame and Miami — two of the biggest games of the season on ESPN — are the ones in the 6:30 p.m. CST time slot, it makes a whole lot more sense that there is no grand conspiracy here.

Regardless, Kiffin is a master at making himself both the underdog and the center of attention, and this looks like another case of just that.
