Hoover City Councilman Mike Shaw chosen as Republican nominee in House District 47 race

The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) announced Monday the selection of Hoover City Councilman Mike Shaw as the party’s general election nominee for the Alabama House of Representatives, District 47.

ALGOP’s candidate committee in early March immediately began the search of finding a nominee to appear on the ballot in place of former State Rep. David Wheeler (R-Vestavia Hills), who suddenly passed at age 72.

Wheeler was the only Republican that qualified to appear on the May 24, 2022, primary election ballot.

In a statement announcing the selection of Shaw, ALGOP chairman John Wahl asserted that the Republican nominee would serve as an “excellent representative” for the constituents of the Birmingham area district.

“This was very difficult decision because there were many outstanding candidates who applied for the position,” advised Wahl. “Each and every one would have represented the district with distinction. However, there can only be one nominee. I would like to congratulate Mike Shaw on his selection, and thank all of those who expressed their interest in serving. Their commitment to the people of House District 47 and our Party is to be commended.”

He added, “We are excited by the experience and energy Councilman Shaw brings to the table. He will be an excellent representative for the people of House District 47. The Republican Party is looking forward to working with him to bring common sense back to politics.”

Shaw, a graduate of Vestavia Hills High School, is the senior vice president and chief technology officer for Mutual Savings Credit Union. He is currently serving his second term as a member of the Hoover City Council.

The candidate is a past chair of both the Auburn College Republicans and the College Republican Federation of Alabama, and is a longtime member of the Mid Alabama Republican Club.

Shaw expressed his honor in ALGOP choosing him as the party’s nominee and conveyed his excitement in running a “vigorous campaign.”

“Growing up in Vestavia Hills and raising our family in Hoover, my home is in House District 47 and has been for most of my life,” noted Shaw. “It would be such an honor to represent this community in the Alabama Legislature! As a Republican, I know our party is one of small government, economic growth, and opportunity for all. I think the voters in District 47 share these values, and I’m looking forward to a vigorous campaign to ensure the people are well-represented in Montgomery.”

Shaw will face the winner of the Democratic primary contest between Christian Cole and Jim Toomey.
