On the seventh episode of the “Grand Old Podcast,” hosted by ALGOP Chairman Scott Stadthagen, Republican nominee for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District State Rep. Rhett Marques (R-Enterprise) discusses why he is the right guy to be one of the state’s next representatives in the U.S. House.
Marques, who represents Alabama House District 91 and spent more than two decades running a tire and automotive business in the Wiregrass, said it’s time to take the common sense he brought to the state Legislature to Washington D.C.
“[W]e cut taxes here in Alabama by $1.5 billion,” Marques said. “They passed the working family tax cut in Washington, the biggest in American history. We passed the biggest one in Alabama history with half the grocery tax. And we can keep doing that. You passed the bill. I was a co-sponsor, on keeping boys out of girls sports, keeping boys out of girls locker rooms. And you know, right now the Democrats who are running, they’re all voting against that.”
Marques secured the Republican nomination with 50% of the vote against five other candidates.
“We passed some of the toughest election integrity laws in the country. We need to pass the Save America Act,” he said.
“And I’m going to go up there, I’m gonna go America first, Alabama first, and we’re gonna get that stuff done. We’re going to pass a farm bill…We’re gonna make sure that boys do not go into girls locker rooms and play in their sports. We’re going to do that stuff. We’re going to keep cutting taxes, putting more money in the pockets of Alabamians and Americans. And we are going to continue to work. We have work to do, don’t get me wrong, but we are going to continue to work to make life more affordable and put more money in the pockets of hardworking Alabamians.”
The state lawmaker said the people of District 2 deserve a representative who is actually from the area.
“I mean, you know, I owned a small business for 24 years,” he explained. “I raised two great daughters with my wife Christina of 32 years. We raised two great daughters there. And I’m very proud of what we did in the Wiregrass as a legislator and as a business owner and as a family man. And you know, my opponent can’t say that because he’s never lived in that district ever. He still lives in Maryland for the most part. He does have a house in Mobile, but he’s never lived in CD2 ever. And I have lived there. I have worked there. I have worked hard there. I’ve raised a family there.”
