Alabama Governor Kay Ivey thinks that late night ABC host Jimmy Kimmel should be fired for his recent comments about President Donald Trump.
Kimmel has received backlash after doing a skit on his show where he hosted a fake White House Correspondents Dinner speech and said, “Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.”
While the bit was recorded days earlier, it received renewed attention in the wake of an attempted assassination of the president at the Correspondents Dinner.
First Lady Melania Trump posted her condemnation of the joke on social media Monday and called on ABC to cut ties with the comedian.
“Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America,” Melania said. “People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate. A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him. Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community.”
An alleged gunman attempted to enter the event where the Trump family and other top officials were evacuated. The gunman was stopped and arrested by Secret Service before getting close to the president.
Ivey echoed Melania’s sentiment Monday, saying ABC needs to do better.
“Amen,” she said on X. “Our First Lady is spot on in calling out the hateful and disgusting performance by Jimmy Kimmel. I am sure ABC could find a much funnier replacement and — here’s a thought — someone who does not joke about assassinating our president.”
The governor also praised law enforcement for protecting Trump and called for prayers for his family.
“God bless our President, First Lady and the men and women in law enforcement,” she said. “Let us pray for our leaders each and every day.”
