If this congressional campaign was a baseball game, Congressman Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) would’ve just struck out.
For the third time in recent weeks, Yellowhammer News has discovered irrefutable evidence that Figures voted against funding, but then publicly claimed credit for the very same funding.
Following our initial report on $39 million in projects for Alabama’s Second Congressional District that Figures opposed on the House floor, YHN dove deeper into Figures’ voting history on appropriations bills and soon found yet another example of Figures apparently attempting to have his cake and eat it, too.
On December 8, 2025, Figures’ official congressional office put out a press release touting “that he secured $2.39 million in funding for projects across Alabama’s 2nd District as a part of his continued effort to protect and strengthen rural communities.”
The funding came for three projects benefiting the City of Tuskegee, Crenshaw County, and the Health Care Authority of the City of Eufaula.

This funding was appropriated by H.R.5371, which Figures voted against on November 12, 2025.
Despite his vote opposing the projects being funded, Figures turned around afterwards and said in his release, “From improving emergency preparedness in Tuskegee to creating safe recreational spaces in Crenshaw County and expanding access to critical medical services in Eufaula, I’m proud to support projects that meet the everyday needs of the people we serve. I will continue fighting to bring resources home and strengthen the path forward for all our residents.”
Yellowhammer News reached out to both Figures and his opponent, Republican nominee State Rep. Rhett Marques (R-Enterprise).
A spokesperson for Figures’ campaign attacked U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) in response, claiming that Palmer did the same thing when he took credit for an early tranche of the Birmingham Northern Beltline funding in the 2021 infrastructure bill.
The Figures campaign cited a Yellowhammer News report from five years ago.
“The provisions that provided funding to these projects – and the more than one dozen other projects we’ve funded – were put in the funding bill by the congressman,” Aryele Bradford, a Figures’ spokesperson said in a statement toYHN.
“That is not debatable. It’s the same way it worked when you all wrote an article about how Gary Palmer – a Republican – got funding into the infrastructure bill he voted against.”
Marques called Figures a liar.
“Go Figure — Shomari is lying about his record yet again,” Marques reacted. “This is what happens when you sell out Alabamians to vote with AOC and the rest of the socialist, swamp squad at every turn. Shomari Figures voted to raise Alabamians’ taxes while voting against bipartisan projects that’d improve Alabamians’ lives and strengthen opportunity across our communities. He is Shomari First and Alabama Last.”
“In Congress, I’ll work with Senator Britt and the rest of our delegation to responsibly bring our tax dollars back home and strategically invest in local projects that help hardworking Alabama families achieve their American Dream. That is plain common sense,” Marques concluded.
