The Alabama Republican Party closed major-party qualifying today at 5 p.m., and the final list is in for the special congressional primary elections across four redistricted districts.
The elections stem from a major victory for Alabama Republicans. Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to clear the way for Alabama to use its 2023 state-drawn congressional map, Governor Kay Ivey called a special primary for Districts 1, 2, 6, and 7, with the primary set for August 11 and no runoff. The general election follows on November 3.
Here are all the Republican candidates who qualified:
Congressional District 1: Lucas Burger, Jerry Carl, John Mills, Austin Sidwell
Congressional District 2: Hampton Harris, Christian Horn, Rhett Marques, David Matthews, Joshua McKee, James Richardson
Congressional District 6: Case Dixon, Gary Palmer
Congressional District 7: Ammie Akin, David W. Perry
District 7, which Democrats have long held, now has two Republican challengers under the redrawn map — a sign of the new political landscape the redistricting fight has created.
Independent and minor party candidates have until August 11 to qualify. Full candidate information is available at algop.org.
