Doug Jones bringing back anti-Trump musician Jason Isbell for Mobile rally in longshot bid against Tuberville

Democratic gubernatorial nominee Doug Jones is once again turning to one of his most outspoken anti-Trump celebrity supporters, bringing musician Jason Isbell back to the campaign trail next month for a rally in downtown Mobile.

Jones previewed the upcoming event during a Sunday night video Q&A, saying his campaign has “a big event” planned in Mobile and would hold “a big rally with Jason Isbell,” according to Lagniappe. Specific details for the downtown Mobile event have not yet been announced.

Isbell is no moderate.

The Alabama-born musician has spent years using his platform to attack conservative Christians and Trump supporters specifically, telling The Guardian in 2018 that Trump-backing Christians weren’t following the example of Jesus, and separately claiming that “God is gone from those people” when describing rural Trump voters.

He’s also appeared at the 2024 Democratic National Convention and campaigned for Democrats well beyond Alabama.

That’s the kind of company Jones is keeping as he attempts to defeat U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville. Isbell has headlined events for Jones going back nearly a decade — a get-out-the-vote concert ahead of Jones’ 2017 special election win, a Birmingham fundraiser during his failed 2020 reelection bid, and Jones’ gubernatorial kickoff in Birmingham this past December.

Jones and Tuberville are now headed for a rematch in November after both easily won their respective gubernatorial primaries in May. Tuberville defeated Jones by roughly 20 percentage points in their 2020 U.S. Senate race.
