Dexter McLendon: Southeast Gas is putting Alabama communities first

Dexter McLendon

In a world where large corporations often feel distant from the communities they serve, there are rare exceptions. Consider the approximately 1,000 public natural gas utilities in the United States.  Most are small and have a few hundred to a few thousand customers.

Despite their size, these utilities make a big impact by providing affordable and efficient natural gas. Southeast Gas, a community-owned natural gas utility serving 14 cities in our state, is a shining example of this. Because it is owned by these Alabama communities, Southeast Gas is more than a utility provider – it’s a neighbor, a partner and a local advocate.

Together, the cities of Abbeville, Andalusia, Brundidge, Dothan, Elba,  Enterprise, Eufaula, Fort Deposit, Greenville, Headland, Luverne, Opp, Ozark, and Troy own and provide Board oversight for Southeast Gas. Most of the Board representatives for these cities are mayors or council members with deep-rooted connections to the communities we serve.

Instead of being driven by the need to satisfy external shareholders or to chase short-term profits, Southeast Gas operates under a unique model where local stakeholders—residents and business owners—have a direct say in how the utility is operated. This ensures that the decisions made by the utility are reflective of the values, needs, and aspirations of the community.

By keeping financial resources local, Southeast Gas helps foster economic development, create local jobs, and maintain affordable rates for its customers. This commitment to community reinvestment has made Southeast Gas an integral part of the region’s economic fabric, playing a pivotal role in supporting local businesses and ensuring that residents have access to affordable, reliable energy.

Southeast Gas also emphasizes environmental responsibility, recognizing that the well-being of its communities depends not only on reliable energy access but also on sustainable, healthy business practices. Through its energy efficiency programs, the company empowers consumers to reduce their energy consumption, lower their bills, and minimize their environmental footprint. By integrating sustainability into its core operations, Southeast Gas demonstrates a forward-thinking approach that balances the needs of today with the preservation of tomorrow.

A key principle of Southeast Gas’ operations is transparency. Community-owned utilities are inherently more accountable to their customers because they are directly answerable to them. Southeast Gas keeps its customers informed about decisions that impact their rates, services, and overall community development. Regular updates and direct, consistent conversations ensure that the voices of local residents are heard and considered in every aspect of the company’s work.

We believe the greatest way to show this transparency is through collaboration with the communities we serve. It is our charge to foster a culture of collaboration with local governments, schools, and community organizations. This relationship is not just transactional but a genuine partnership to solve problems, create opportunities, and support local initiatives. Whether it’s funding education programs, supporting community events, or helping with emergency response efforts, Southeast Gas is committed to being a good neighbor and an active participant in the region’s growth.

As energy demand grows, Southeast Gas is at the forefront of developing innovative solutions to ensure reliable service. From transitioning to cleaner energy sources to investing in energy-saving technologies, Southeast Gas is actively shaping the future of energy in its region while maintaining its focus on affordability and environmental stewardship.

Southeast Gas serves as an example of how business can and should be done with the community’s well-being at its core. Its community-owned model, commitment to sustainability, transparency, and long-term planning has set it apart. By staying rooted in the community and putting the needs of local residents and businesses first, Southeast Gas is not only providing essential energy services but also playing a key role in building a stronger, more sustainable future for the region.

As consumers continue to demand more accountability and responsibility from the businesses they support, we believe our model, centered on community ownership and local values, is not only viable but essential for building trust, improving quality of life, and ensuring a sustainable future for all.
