The Alabama Crimson Tide is on the cusp of getting started with spring camp, which is the first official signal that football season will soon be upon us.
Spring practice is always followed closely by fans and media, but no one really knows anything outside of the building until A-Day rolls around where fans gather in April in Bryant-Denny Stadium to watch effectively an exhibition game for the Crimson Tide.
After playing in front of a packed and excited stadium for the first A-Day of the Kalen DeBoer era, things may look a little bit different on the field this time around.
Throughout the winter, a hot topic among coaches has been changing the way spring games are done or cancelling them all together. The presence of the transfer portal makes coaches have less of a desire to showcase their depth to everyone only to have rival coaches like what they see and try to get their players to leave and come to them.
Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian made headlines last week when he revealed his team would not be having a spring game at all.
A-Day, which is currently tentatively scheduled for April 12, has not been cancelled, but DeBoer revealed it may not look the same.
“A lot of times here, the A-Day Game, it’s been more of a practice, and there’s been some scrimmaging, not necessarily much of a game,” DeBoer said via On3’s Pete Nakos, citing injuries as a main reason for changing things rather than tampering.
“Even when I was at Fresno State, we called it the spring preview. Especially this year, there’s some things we’re working through with some injuries and so forth. So it’ll definitely be modified. We want to try to have some type of event around April 12.”
What exactly A-Day looks like seems to be a mystery, but it’s safe to say Tide fans will have the chance to see the team in the stadium in some form or fashion as has been tradition.
