U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) agrees with President Donald Trump that some changes need to be made at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.

Lonnie G. Bunch III, the first Black secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and a historian who previously founded the National Museum of African American History and Culture, announced earlier this week that he would retire at the end of the year after seven years in the role.

The resignation comes roughly a month after the White House released a report on the “radical left propaganda and degeneracy” at the museum.

Moore, who is the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Alabama, discussed the issue Wednesday on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program.”

“I think often, and you know this if you if you look around Washington D.C., 90% vote Democrat, and so this wasteful government and the groups of bureaucracies that have been running this country and messaging to next generations, very often, they don’t really put history out there in an accurate way,” Moore argued. “And for them to push the left’s agenda at taxpayer expense, I think when the president calls it out and when people realize the veil has been pulled back, and and they now have to be accountable.”

The 162-page report on the Smithsonian is a result of Trump’s “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” executive order.

“A lot of times, they can’t handle that pressure and they resign, and it may have come from pressure from the White House,” Moore continued. “But man, America is a wonderful nation. We’re not perfect in any kind of way, but we need to represent that history because what our parents and grandparents loved about this nation, our grandchildren and great grandchildren need to be reminded of. This is an experiment. It’s 250 years old. It’s the first time that we’ve allowed we’ve seen on the on the world stage people allowed to govern themselves and elect their leaders without a monarch or a tyrant or some kind.”

Bunch, 73, said the timing reflected a personal decision rather than the criticism from Trump, though he acknowledged the job had grown stressful. He said he plans to remain involved in defending the institution’s independence and promoting a full, complex telling of American history.

“The Smithsonian, certainly being funded by taxpayers, needs to be part of that, putting that message out,” Moore added. “And we don’t need this woke America’s awful kind of left leadership being put out as propaganda to the next generation of this nation. I’m sure that there may have been pressure from the White House, but when you pull the veil back on some of these folks and you show who they really are and people who are in power who are getting paid by the taxpayer to put the wrong message out, they need to be held accountable.”
