Baldwin County metro area among top ten fastest growing in the United States, according to Census data

Alabama is currently experiencing a period of rapid population growth. In one particular county, that growth has been more pronounced.

The Baldwin County metro, according to newly published data from the U.S. Census Bureau, is now not only the fastest growing metro area in the state, it is also one of the top 10 fastest growing in the entire country.

“Baldwin County has so much to offer. Over 8 million visitors a year come to Baldwin County to enjoy our beaches, malls, restaurants, golf courses, and small town atmosphere,” Commissioner Matt McKenzie said. “In my opinion, this is concrete evidence that Baldwin County is a desirable place to live. Many times, visitors become lifelong residents.”

Three cities within the Baldwin County metro area experienced the most annual growth. Daphne’s population for example rose from 28,000 to 30,000. Fairhope’s grew from 23,800 to 25,000. While Foley recorded the largest rise in population, going from 20,000 to 26,000. That represents a 2.8% jump in annual growth.

Daphne Mayor Robin LeJeune explained why he thinks the area is growing and also believes that it’s becoming more known nationally.

“For the schools, for the bay, it’s a great place to raise your family,” LeJeune said. “Well, now the word has gotten out to the rest of the country, so now you’re seeing a lot more influx of people coming outside the state.”

Fairhope Mayor, Sherry Sullivan, touted what her city offers to potential movers.

“Who wouldn’t want to live in Fairhope? It’s beautiful,” Sullivan said. “We offer a quality of life that most people are looking for. It’s a safe walkable community. We have great schools; we have great access to healthcare so all the things people are looking for.”

Per the data, four counties, including Mobile, have around half of the new people within the state. The other counties experiencing large amounts of growth include Madison, Limestone, and Shelby.
